With students already well into a new school year, one has started 2019 off with a new educational space that was traditionally used only for quiet reading and book borrowing time.
De La Salle Catholic College Cronulla has opened its revamped library – and it is way beyond what a typical library once was.
The layout of the library is to promote group work, rather than students being tucked away in an isolated corner.
Teaching and learning coordinator, Courtney Fraser, says students are reinforcing what they learn in class by teaching each other.
“Teachers are encouraging students to use dynamic resources in their research,” she said.
“We are putting our funds into creating an attractive, designer conceived environment making the school library the natural choice for students who want to enquire further into their studies.
“It also creates a great tutorial space where students can meet their teachers outside class time for further guidance.”
The library has also extended its hours to 5pm and into the holidays, to give students extra time after school to work on their assessments.
Student Meg Wade welcomes the modern make-over.
“I enjoy studying in the new library with my classmates, because we can actively discuss issues and themes from our courses,” she said. “It sure beats the old days of cramming from a reserved book.”
