Central to the religious life of the school is the person of Jesus Christ who came among us ‘as one who serves’ (Luke 22.27). Our Catholic school is committed to reaching out to help those in need, through charitable outreach initiatives. All outreach activities connect to the person of Jesus Christ and to the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Drawing on the Catholic Social Teaching of the Church, we have a deep commitment to supporting a range of charitable organisations, families and individuals in need.
Social justice is integral to living out our Catholic values, recognising our obligation to help those in need. We have an active social justice group made up of college leaders, and Year 11 and 12 students who meet regularly to organise and plan fundraising activities to support each of the following:
- The Lasallian Foundation (a primary focus for fundraising. Students contribute to a sister school in Asia)
- Caritas – Project Compassion
- Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea (cancer research fundraiser)
- St Vincent de Paul (Christmas Hampers)
In addition to this, students volunteer to collect for the Red Shield appeal and raise funds for cancer research and other relevant initiatives.
Students also attend an annual Social Justice Forum where they share ideas and learn about various projects of other Catholic High Schools.
We believe that in working to help others, students’ experiences as active members of the community work to develop a lifelong spirituality. This is a practice that captures the vision of St John Baptist de La Salle and allows our young people to develop a sense of selflessness and community.
Founder’s Day highlights these Lasallian values as we celebrate Mass as a community and students work for the remainder of the day making a difference in the lives of others.
